Education Palm Springs public schools are run by the Palm Springs Unified School District, an independent district with 5 board members. There are 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school in the city. Students have the choice of Cahuilla Elementary, Cielo Vista Elementary, Finchy Elementary or Vista Del Monte Elementary. Students will continue to Cree Middle School and Palm Springs High School. There are also a few private schools of varying grade levels, including three Christian-affiliated schools and a Montessori school. Local institutions of higher education include the nearby College of the Desert as well as campuses for CSU San Bernardino and UC Riverside, all in nearby Palm Desert.
Recreation The city is full of golf courses and swimming pools, both popular activities in its desert location. Besides golf and swimming, there are courses for tennis, horseback riding, and hiking, which are three of the more popular recreations of Palm Springs. Hiking opportunities are everywhere throughout the desert as well as the nearby mountains—Little San Bernardino Mountains to the north, Santa Rosa Mountains to the south and San Jacinto Mountains to the west. There are casinos throughout Palm Springs which help drive its economy. There are hundreds of diverse restaurants in the city. One interesting facet of local life is the downtown area on Thursday evenings—it becomes Village Fest, with arts and crafts, a farmers market, food and live entertainment. There are several other big events and festivals throughout the year.
LGBT Community Palm Springs has the distinction of housing a greater percentage of LGBT residents than even San Francisco, at 35%. The LGBT population of Palm Springs is an estimated 7 times the national average. It has even elected two openly gay mayors in a row. The city holds a Gay Pride Parade and Festival the first weekend of November, which has come to attract around 35,000 visitors. In the spring, there are more LGBT-related events. The “White Party” brings thousands of visiting gay men for its parties and concerts, while Dinah Shore Weekend is one of the largest events nationally targeted toward lesbian women. |
